Claiming Fraud On Credit Card Purchase...?

Building credit, pay now or wait for bill?
I just got my first credit card and because I handle my money very well, I figure that it will be best if I pay my credit card purchases immediately. But, someone just told me that it is better to wait for the bill, because it looks better towards building credit. I see no difference, I just like paying it off right away so that I don't forget to do so (or in the [unlikely] case that I do not have the money, I won't be paying interest or ever be hassled by collections)

Do I get charged interest every time I make a credit card purchase?
I feel like this is a fairly dumb questions, but I'm still a bit confused. I am a college student, and I'm looking for a way to build credit in a very small way. I want to get a student credit card that I will use for gas only, and I will only spend what I can afford to pay back every month. I don't plan on asking for a credit increase for at least a year and half, and I really will only use this for gas. I have a very very small income, so my only option is to stay within the limits and only spend what I can afford. My question... I know there is an interest rate with every card. Say I charge $40 worth of gas in one month on my credit card. If I am able to pay off all $40 at once, will I only pay $40? Or do I have to pay interest fees regardless of whether or not the payment is a minimum?
